John 16:12-15 Effective Christians stay Connected to HELP! Note: Let us review the zone of truth in John 16:8-11. There are 7 ministries of the Holy Spirit in the Upper Room Discourse, regarding our Parakletos Helper. (John 14:16 contains the promise of Jesus to the apostles and all other believers of this church age.) Memorize the 7 Ministries of the Holy Spirit: 1) Teaching, Jn. 14:26; 2) Reminding, Jn. 14:26; 3) Guidance, Jn. 15:26. 4) Conviction: Note 3 necessary significant facts found in Jn. 16:8-11; 5) Guidance, Jn. 16:13; 6) Communication, Jn. 16:13; 7) Glorifying Jesus Christ, Jn. 16:13. All these 7 ministries are necessary for effective Christian living. Regarding item 4 above: The Helper’s work is necessary for sinners and sinning saints to come to a place in their hearts where they understand God’s view point. The conviction comes with the Spirit’s impact on the heart from the use of truth from God’s Word, James 1:18, Eph. 1:13. Back to John 16:8-11: Note here that this work is done to worldlings. This Greek word for world is kosmos. This word refers to planet earth. Both saved and lost are on earth or are worldlings. Because the whole world lies in wickedness, I Jn. 5:19, born again believers and all sinners need the convicting work of the Spirit in these three areas of their earthly pilgrimage. This word conviction can also be translated, to convince. He convicts and convinces humanity that sin is and it has consequences. Sin is contrasted with righteousness and understood as people look at a Holy God and the dark evil existence that earthlings have, Rom. 3:23. Judgment exists for sinners and the righteous. We all will give an account of our lives to God, Rom. 14:12; I Pet. 4:1-6. The Holy Spirit is given that we might be victorious Christians and triumph over the slavery to keep on sinning! |
