Discipleship Defined Here

Discipleship is the utmost godly design for Christian living. Being like Christ in word and deed is the sought for goal by believers. As a mentor teaches the tricks of a trade so in discipleship we learn to model or learn the servant, humble lifestyle by following Jesus Christ. It is a joy to follow and learn Jesus Christ. For the 12 it just didn’t happen overnight. Jesus spent 3 years with these rough around the edges guys. So many life events happened and Jesus taught them along the way. It is like the servant of Abraham in Genesis 24 when he told about his trip to find a wife for Isaac. He said, “I being in the way... (along the road of life) the Lord led me (was in the will of his master). The will of God is very important and this is what each of us need to know. If we can stay in the perfect center of God’s will we will look more like disciples. The divine path for life comes slowly but gains momentum as the years go by.

Three important factors about disciples: They are learners: mathetes (translated disciple in English) means learner. Jesus called them and they followed Him, leaving all behind. Finally as the disciples and Jesus spent time together they build a relationship with Him. These factors for disciples describe discipleship.

Jesus taught the disciples and they learned the ways of the Lord because they were diligent and faithful. The Spirit blessed them and helped them, empowered and directed them. The disciples followed and the relationship with Christ deepened as time moved on.

There is no disciple that begins without the Spirit’s call. God has work to do to refine each one that we might be useful in His service. Second the disciples had a positive response to Christ as they followed Him. There was obedience on the part of each individual that blended together with the work of the Spirit to cause each one among the 12 to be as the Lord wanted them. One was a phony, Judas Iscariot, only time will tell the difference between the true and false disciple. As Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven; but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven.” Mt. 7:21.
